ESOL & Family Learning

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Language) courses have been identified as a major need by the local community. Consultation carried out with a sample of groups from Edmonton schools highlighted that 78% of parents were not confident about speaking English and 76% said they would be interested in attending ESOL at their local school.  When new arrivals and non English speakers arrive in this country they can feel socially isolated and do not always access the support they are entitled to due to poor English and a lack of confidence in integrating with the local community. The project includes a rolling programme of ESOL and Family Learning.  Courses are either 30 or 12 weeks long and offer accreditation in most cases. The courses are offered free to parents and are funded by the partnership and Skills for Work. We have also subsidised the cost of accreditation to keep learner fees to a minimum.
